Norton CleanSweep 2000 Eliminates Messy Internet Buildup With One Mouse Click, Award-Winning Utility Recovers Hard Drive Clutter Caused by Web Surfing

Toronto, August 23, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), today announced Norton CleanSweep 2000, the quickest and easiest way to safely eliminate Internet buildup and other hard drive clutter. Norton CleanSweep 2000 helps restore a computer to optimal performance levels by removing Internet debris, unneeded files, and unwanted software applications. Also an integral component in Symantec's award-winning Norton SystemWorks utilities suite, Norton CleanSweep 2000 features an intuitive interface that makes cleanup simple and error-proof. Customers can buy Norton Utilities 2000 immediately at Symantec's recently introduced online store at www.SymantecStore.com as well as other online retailers.

"Norton CleanSweep 2000 offers consumers of all levels of expertise a safe and easy tool for finding and cleaning away unwanted Internet clutter, thereby recovering valuable hard disk space and, in turn, restoring system performance," said Enrique Salem, vice president, Symantec Security and Assistance Business Unit.

Internet Sweep
Daily computer use contributes to the creation of invisible and unwanted files on a computer system. Internet surfing magnifies this problem by copying each web page a user visits, logging its URL in a comprehensive list, and allowing the installation of unnecessary web page-based software on a user's hard drive. To recover this valuable hard drive space, Norton CleanSweep 2000 includes Internet Sweep, which automatically cleans more Internet debris than any other uninstaller product. This innovative technology not only cleans out folders containing cookies, plug-ins, and cache files, it also tracks files installed over the Internet, such as ActiveX controls, with a single mouse click.

Charles Hanskat, a professional engineer and regional marketing manager for a San Diego-based construction firm, uses Internet Sweep to remove temporary cache files, cookies, browser plug-in programs, and ActiveX controls he accumulates after every Internet search. "There's no easy way to clean up this Internet debris using any other method," Hanskat said. "For me, Norton CleanSweep is the best tool for recovering hard disk space quickly and safely."

Improved Interface
Norton CleanSweep 2000 includes a new, intuitive interface. It also contains informative wizards that ease the removal of outdated applications and the widest array of unneeded and unwanted files.

Fast & Safe Cleanup
For fast, easy, and comprehensive cleanup of invisible, space-eating files in the Recycle Bin and Temp folders, Norton CleanSweep 2000 offers Fast & Safe Cleanup, an innovative one-button cleanup feature that finds and removes unnecessary files that are safe to remove. A graphical interface indicates how much space can be recovered. Users can delete space-eating files immediately or schedule cleanups.

Safety Sweep and "the Safe"
To guard against accidental file deletion during cleanup, Norton CleanSweep 2000 includes Safety Sweep and "the Safe." SafetySweep protects critical files from removal and backs up deletable files before eliminating them. If a user accidentally deletes a file, he or she can retrieve it from a backup. An additional level of file protection is offered with the Safe, which prevents files in the Recycle Bin from being deleted. Users select which file types should never be deleted; then, should one of those file types be sent to the Recycle Bin, the Safe retrieves it. Users can choose file types from a predefined list or create their own lists.

Also new to Norton CleanSweep 2000 is Norton Web Services, an Internet-based service for one-button problem solving, self-help information, and extended support services. Symantec is offering Norton CleanSweep 2000 customers a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services for just CDN $10.95, which is regularly available for CDN $44.95 per year.

Norton CleanSweep continues to earn recognition from editors and reviewers. Most recently, PC Magazine singled out Norton CleanSweep in its 1999 Utility Guide, calling the software "our first choice in its field." In 1998, it was named Editor's Choice by both PC Magazine and CNET.

Pricing and Availability
Norton CleanSweep 2000 is available immediately for an estimated retail price of CDN $59.95 from Symantec's recently introduced online store at www.SymantecStore.com. It will be in retail stores in late-August. In addition, it will also be available at the following online retailers: www.beyond.com, www.outpost.com, www.downloadwarehouse.com, and www.compusanet.com. For more information on how to become a Symantec business partner, retailers can visit http://business.symantec.com. A CDN $30 rebate is available for users of earlier versions of the product.

Norton CleanSweep 2000 requires an IBM PC or 100 percent compatible, Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0, an Intel 80486/66 or higher, 8MB RAM for Windows 95/98 or 16MB RAM for Windows NT, 17MB hard disk space, a CD-ROM drive, and 256-colour VGA or better video.
