Norton SystemWorks 2000 Sets The Pace For Utility Suites

Includes New Versions of All Products, Enhanced Integration for Complete PC Protection & Problem-Solving

Toronto, August 30, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton SystemWorks 2000, the latest edition of the industry's leading utility suite. Norton SystemWorks 2000 features new versions of all the products, improved system performance and increased ease-of-use through tighter integration. Norton SystemWorks 2000 is an integrated suite that protects against viruses, solves most PC problems, guards against crashes, optimizes system performance, keeps programs up to date, and enables emergency system recovery.

"With Norton SystemWorks 2000, Symantec is providing consumers an intelligent, easy-to-use solution that includes everything they need to keep their computers working," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "By delivering the best-of-breed utilities in a completely integrated package, Symantec is ensuring that consumers and small businesses are able to always enjoy safe and productive computing."

Norton SystemWorks 2000 Standard Edition includes Norton Utilities 2000, Norton AntiVirus 2000, Norton CleanSweep 2000, Norton CrashGuard 2000, and a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services, an Internet-based service for one-button problem solving, self-help information, and extended support services. Also included is LiveAdvisor, a new service built into select Symantec software that enables users to receive product tips and tricks, service and support, upgrade information, and LiveUpdate notifications delivered to their desktops via the Internet. Norton SystemWorks 2000 Professional Edition includes all of the products in the Standard Edition as well as Norton Ghost 2000 and Norton 2000-all in one tightly integrated package. Norton SystemWorks 2000 also features a free bonus pack that includes Zip-It, Visual Page, Norton Secret Stuff, WinFax Basic Edition, and, for Standard Edition users, Norton 2000 BIOS Test & Fix.

A key element of Norton SystemWorks 2000 is the new Norton Symmetry technology. Symantec's exclusive engine technology, assures that all Norton products work together seamlessly to provide consumers unprecedented ease of use, performance and reliability. With Norton Symmetry, all Norton products look, act, and perform the same. Norton Symmetry is another example of Symantec's commitment to quality, performance, and customer satisfaction.

Norton SystemWorks 2000 is raising the bar on integration and centralized control with new "snap-in" technology. This enables Norton products to simply snap into Norton SystemWorks via the new integrator. This technology allows future products to snap into Norton SystemWorks, making the Norton SystemWorks integrator the central console for all Norton products. Once a product has snapped into Norton SystemWorks, the consumer benefits from a single user interface, centralized access to help and options, and reduced depletion of disk space.

Norton SystemWorks 2000 also includes several enhancements designed to increase system performance. During a virus alert, the user's system now remains in Windows mode, which reduces system conflicts while enabling full use of the mouse and providing the user a more detailed explanation of appropriate next-step responses. Norton SystemWorks 2000 also automatically scans incoming e-mail attachments for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, Eudora Pro and Eudora Lite, Netscape Messenger and Netscape Mail, and other popular POP-based e-mail applications, thereby ensuring more complete virus protection. In addition, improved compressed-file virus detection and repair features automatically eliminate viruses even in multiple compressed levels, such as a ZIP file inside another ZIP file.

Also new to Norton SystemWorks 2000 are Windows hardware diagnostics which enable users to quickly check the health of their PC system hard disk, speakers, memory, CD-ROM, printer, modem, mouse, and more-with a single click. An enhanced SpeedDisk utility enables users to optimize their hard disks faster than before while requiring less disk space.

Norton SystemWorks 2000 offers a single customizable install, giving users the flexibility to install any or all of the products and/or components in the Norton SystemWorks 2000 suite and, in turn, easily see which products are installed. Once installed, users have access to the Norton SystemWorks 2000 suite and bonus pack from a single window.

Making a comprehensive Rescue Disk Set is easy with Norton SystemWorks 2000. Unlike other products that require users to make one disk set for diagnostics and another for anti-virus, Norton SystemWorks 2000 requires only one Rescue Disk Set for both Norton Utilities and Norton AntiVirus.

Pricing and Availability
Norton SystemWorks 2000 Standard and Professional Editions are available now for an estimated retail price of CDN$89.95 and CDN$149.95, respectively. Users of Symantec point products can upgrade to Norton SystemWorks for CDN$59.95 or Norton SystemWorks Professional Edition for CDN$119.95 with $30 mail-in rebates.
