Symantec's Norton Internet Security First Product to Give PC Users Complete Internet Protection

Now PC users can surf the Net with confidence with complete firewall, parental control, and anti-virus capabilities in an integrated, easy-to-use solution

Toronto, Ont., - October 19, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton Internet Security 2000, the first product to offer a comprehensive and fully integrated Internet Security and Online Privacy solution that safeguards PC users against the vulnerabilities and dangers of Internet-based computing. As Internet use skyrockets, exposure to malicious Internet content increases as well, underscoring the importance of maintaining a secure and private online environment. With the balance of convenience and security that is most appropriate for every user, Norton Internet Security 2000 keeps personal information safe and defends computers against dangerous viruses and malicious hackers. In addition, it gives parents control over their kids' access to the Net.

Norton Internet Security 2000 combines several advanced technologies to ensure a controlled and safe Internet experience for all computer users. Norton Internet Security 2000 is the first product to include protection against all of the major Internet threats by including a personal firewall, parental control capabilities, and anti-virus in a single integrated solution that intelligently balances ease-of-use and functionality for maximum usability and online protection.

"The release of Norton Internet Security 2000 is the next level in Symantec's ongoing commitment to providing Internet security solutions that address consumers and small businesses most pressing needs. Norton Internet Security 2000 enables PC users to use the Internet with confidence, knowing that Norton is guarding them against privacy infringements, hackers, destructive viruses, and inappropriate content for children," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit.

Norton Internet Security 2000 delivers a comprehensive solution with planned support for Windows 95, 98, Windows NT and Windows 2000 PCs to protect consumers against serious Internet threats at several levels. While competing products provide limited protection, requiring users to purchase and install several different software packages, Norton Internet Security 2000 offers a complete, integrated solution. Today, higher bandwidth and "always on" connections increase the need for greater online protection. To that end, Norton Internet Security 2000 features personal firewall technology from WRQ, Inc., which prevents unauthorised Internet connections and protects the privacy of critical data such as credit card and financial information. Additional anti hacker features can halt potential Denial of Service attacks and flood attacks.

To ensure that Norton Internet Security 2000 supports the most up-to-date and appropriate parental control capabilities, Symantec continues to develop the software in collaboration with feedback offered from parents and teachers nation-wide. Users can set up Norton Internet Security 2000 to automatically block information sent over the Internet to Web sites and includes a customisable list of pre-approved URLs to help in proactively establishing an optimal Internet experience for children.

In addition, because Norton Internet Security 2000 leverages the award-winning technology of Norton AntiVirus, the number one anti-virus product in the industry, users can be assured that Norton Internet Security 2000 is a best-of-breed solution for today as well as tomorrow. When users encounter unknown problems, they can send them to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Centre (SARC) for analysis; solutions are returned to customers quickly, thereby providing unmatched response speeds.

Norton Internet Security 2000 provides the usability features PC users require. An intuitive user interface facilitates installation and set-up. Customisable user settings enable consumers to quickly and easily configure Norton Internet Security 2000 to meet their specific needs. For additional flexibility, Norton Internet Security 2000 can be set up to accommodate several users, each with a personalised Internet environment. The PC "administrator" has complete control over the level of Internet access for each account on the PC.

Pricing and Availability
Norton Internet Security 2000 is scheduled to be available fourth quarter and will be priced at $89.95 (CND), which includes one year of free updates to the Norton Internet Security 2000 subscription service.
