Symantec Provides Power Users Fast and Effective Solution to Optimise Windows NT Volumes

Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations is the Only Solution to Provide Complete Optimisation-Including Master File Table and Meta Data-in Real Time

Toronto, Ont. - October 25, 1999 - Symantec Canada today announced the availability of the consumer version of Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations, the fastest and most effective disk optimisation tool to help power users keep their workstations running at peak performance. The first utility to completely optimise Windows NT volumes online without a system reboot and without turning off other services such as anti-virus software, Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations improves system uptime, increases productivity, and limits future fragmentation. Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations is now available for purchase via Internet download at the Symantec web site, ca.symantecstore.com.

"Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT revolutionises the NT disk drive utility market just as Norton Utilities' Speed Disk utility did for Windows 95/98 environments," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "By offering power users the first disk utility to go beyond simple defragmentation and also intelligently optimise volumes, Symantec is continuing its 15-year tradition of delivering best-of-breed solutions for maximising system performance and end-user uptime."

Traditional disk utilities are limited to defragmenting Windows NT volumes, rearranging the order in which file content is organised, so that the data in each file is stored in contiguous disk clusters. Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations goes a critical step farther and optimises drives, arranging defragmented files so that the most important or frequently accessed files are at the beginning. Consequently, these files are more quickly accessible, which saves the power user valuable time and results in significant improvements in system performance.

Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations optimises highly fragmented drives as well as drives that have as little as three percent free space. Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstation is the only disk utility to optimise the entire hard drive, including the directories, Master File Table (MFT), page files, and meta data.

After its initial run to arrange a drive's contents in the most optimal order, Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstation completes each subsequent optimisation quickly and efficiently, and without having to complete additional passes required by traditional disk defragmentation tools. Not only are competitors' disk utilities unable to optimise the MFT and meta data, but they also require that systems go offline through a reboot and/or halt services, such as anti-virus programs, during defragmentation.

Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations defragments and optimises online without a system reboot and without affecting anti-virus software. As a result, Norton Speed Disk 5.0 for Windows NT Workstations provides the most comprehensive optimisation capabilities in the most secure and reliable manner.
