Sterling Commerce and Symantec Integrate pcAnywhere with CONNECT: Remote, providing Customers a Superior Remote Management Solution
Integration Allows System Administrators to Decrease Support Costs Associated with Managing Remote and Mobile Users
ATLANTA, Ga. and CUPERTINO, Calif. - Nov. 29, 1999 - The Managed Systems Division (MSD, formerly XcelleNet) of Sterling Commerce, Inc. (NYSE: SE) and Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYNC) today announced a partnership to provide an enhanced solution for remote systems management that integrates Symantec's
pcAnywhere 9.0, the industry leader in remote support, with MSD's CONNECT:Remote, the leading remote systems management solution. The integration of pcAnywhere into CONNECT:Remote will enable systems administrators to better manage their remote and mobile systems with enhanced trouble-shooting capabilities, decreasing support costs and
increasing user productivity.
"Several years ago we added remote control capabilities to CONNECT:Remote so that our customers could troubleshoot problems on remote PCs as they arise. But with the rapid development of the mobile and remote markets, we have found that customers needed even more effective remote control tools," said Joan E. Herbig, president of Sterling Commerce MSD. "Responding to this need, we went to the marketplace to seek out the leading remote control product to upgrade our remote control functionality. We found it in pcAnywhere and we are delighted to partner with Symantec to bring two
best-of-class solutions together and provide our customers with the most advanced tools to meet the challenges they face in managing remote systems."
"Administrators can now streamline their processes by using pcAnywhere for troubleshooting and fixing remote system problems from within CONNECT:Remote," said Elizabeth Magliana, vice president of product management, Symantec Corporation. "Additionally, this combined solution allows corporations to extend their remote support capabilities beyond the corporate firewall to provide hands-on remote support to any corporate user, anywhere."
The integration of pcAnywhere and CONNECT:Remote will provide administrators the best solution on the market to effectively troubleshoot problems on their remote PCs. With pcAnywhere, IT administrators can connect to a remote PC and operate it as if they were on site, enabling them to witness and fix specific problems the user is having as well as walk a user through a process or training exercise as if they were by their side. The heightened troubleshooting capability provided by pcAnywhere coupled with
CONNECT:Remote's tools for software distribution, asset and configuration management, content and application management and diagnostics and recovery, create the most comprehensive solution for managing and maintaining remote and mobile systems.
MSD will also provide pcAnywhere in a future version of CONNECT:Manage, the company's Internet-powered remote systems management product. Organisations that support mobile and extranet users in a Web-based environment will be able to more effectively manage these rapidly growing classes of PC users with industry-leading technology.
"As enterprises extend the reach of applications to its mobile and remote population, the ability to manage these users becomes a critical IT requirement," says Stephen Drake, senior research analyst with IDC. "The integration of Sterling Commerce's CONNECT: Remote with Symantec's pcAnywhere provides complimentary help desk functionality to core remote systems management features such as software distribution."
About pcAnywhere
IT professionals world-wide use Symantec's award winning pcAnywhere 9.0 for remote support and troubleshooting. Using this proven, comprehensive solution allows administrators to quickly and easily connect to remote systems and provide hands-on support. This enables the identification and resolution of problems without travelling to the remote system, reducing support costs and maximising productivity. pcAnywhere 9.0's enhanced security capabilities allow administrators to run secure remote support
sessions with Windows NT user and group authentication, with SNMP messaging to quickly alert administrators of pcAnywhere activities, and with central logging and auditing. pcAnywhere version 9.0 also provides LDAP Directory support allowing administrators to more easily locate and connect to pcAnywhere hosts and gateways on large networks, intranets and the Internet.
About CONNECT:Remote
The Managed Systems Division's CONNECT:Remote is the industry-leading remote systems management solution. Optimised for fixed-site remote systems, CONNECT:Remote is a comprehensive software solution for turning remote systems into fully managed clients. CONNECT:Remote's unique queued event architecture allows systems to operate offline, and when a connection is established, it minimises time and bandwidth requirements through automated data compression. It is designed to make the most efficient use of unreliable, low-speed connections, through:
- Efficient on-the-fly compression of data and application files;
- Checkpoint restart, to resume failed transfers at the point of failure;
- Incremental updates to minimise transfer size;
- Offline processing, such as data collection and software installation.
