Symantec Appoints Gail E. Hamilton to Lead Enterprise Solutions Division

Hamilton Named Senior Vice President of Group Focused on Internet Security Solutions for the Enterprise Market

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 27, 2000 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), a global leader in Internet security products and services, today announced the appointment of Gail E. Hamilton to senior vice president of the company's Enterprise Solutions Division. In her new role, Hamilton will lead the development and extension of Symantec's enterprise-focused solutions, applying the strengths of her more than 20 years' experience growing leading technology and services businesses serving the enterprise market.

"Our enterprise customers face increasingly complex Internet security issues and threats that can have profound implications for their businesses," said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman, president and CEO. "Gail's extensive cross-platform development experience for network environments and her knowledge of broadband issues will help Symantec better address the needs of our large enterprise customers. We welcome her experience and leadership as we partner with our business customers to provide critical Internet security solutions."

Hamilton has extensive management experience at both Compaq Computers and Hewlett-Packard Company. Most recently, she served as the general manager of the Communications Platform Division for Compaq where she was responsible for the UNIX and NT servers businesses targeting communications companies. While in that position, Hamilton launched several significant initiatives to integrate and extend Compaq's services and applications into a single, focused program for enterprise customers.

As the general manager of the Telecom Platform Division at HP, Hamilton was responsible for the adjunct computers, wide-area networking and broadband Internet businesses. Her role there included focusing on broadband Internet computer hardware/software products and integration services enabling telecommunication companies, cable companies, and Internet service providers (ISPs) to generate high-speed multimedia services over the Internet and Intranet.

Hamilton also has extensive marketing experience from previous positions with Microtec Research and HP. At Microtec, she served as the vice president of marketing and business unit manager where she established a worldwide product marketing function and directed the integration of marketing with the company's engineering capabilities.

Starting her career at HP as a research and development engineer in the Logic Systems Operation unit, Hamilton was later promoted to research and development project manager and product line and Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) business manager within the same division; subsequent positions included product marketing manager for the UNIX System Software Operation unit, division marketing manager for the Software Engineering Systems Division, and group marketing manager for the Networked Systems Group.

Hamilton has held a number of positions in both community and corporate boards, including the Colorado Opera Festival and the University of Colorado Alumni Association. She also has been an advocate for corporate volunteerism by sponsoring the Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, the Habitat for Humanity and the Capitol Area Food Bank. Hamilton received a master's degree in electrical engineering and administration from Stanford University and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Colorado.
