Symantec Executive Named as Delegate to G-8 Paris Conference

Conference to Focus on High-Tech Crime, Seeks to Find International Solutions

CUPERTINO, Calif. - May 15, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced it has been invited to join the U.S. delegation at the G-8 conference, An Industry - Government Dialogue on Safety and Confidence in Cyberspace, this week in Paris. Symantec's chief technical officer, Ron Moritz, will serve as a delegate to the conference, convened to address various cyber-threats and to enhance international cooperation in identifying such threats.

"Recent computer virus attacks illustrate, once again, that cyber-crime happens on an international level," Moritz said. "The G-8 conference will bring together computer security and policy leaders from both the public and private sectors to examine the roles that government and industry can play in preventing and combating cyber-crime and to identify common, worldwide policies and consequences to be applied against cyber-criminals."

The conference, which runs May 15-17, is scheduled to strengthen exchanges between public and private entities, commercial and administrative sectors, and between countries. Delegates at the conference will also conduct threat evaluations on newly developed technologies to identify possible misuse by criminals. The conference is part of an ongoing series of meetings focused on enhancing the abilities of law enforcement to investigate and prosecute high-tech and computer related crime.

"The goal of this conference is to identify ways to build public confidence in the safety and security of the Internet to foster the growth of e-commerce and to manage the hysteria that often follows a highly visible cyber-attack. Computer hackers and virus writers need to know there is no safe haven once they have committed a high-tech crime," Moritz said. Moritz is an Internet security expert with more than 15 years in the industry. He currently chairs the Common Content Inspection API interoperability standardization initiative for the security industry. He has published and presented numerous papers on a variety of security topics including mobile code security, web browser security, security and electronic commerce, and computer ethics and privacy. The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium has certified Moritz as an information systems security professional.
