Symantec Provides Carrier-Class Anti-Virus Technology for Range of Network Appliance Devices

TORONTO, Ont. - April 10, 2001 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced the availability of CarrierScan Server for NetApp filers and NetCache appliances. The first to protect both devices, CarrierScan Server 2.1 integrates critical protection from viruses and other malicious code with Network Appliance's powerful data management and content delivery products to ensure the safe and reliable storage and delivery of network-attached data.

CarrierScan Server, Symantec's highly scalable and proven anti-virus solution, enables companies to tightly integrate anti-virus scanning and repair capabilities into services such as Web-based e-mail, Web-based file sharing, Internet-available databases and other applications that deliver files over the Internet. CarrierScan Server can be deployed on one or more servers inside a company's infrastructure to handle virtually any load. As a business grows, customers can simply add additional CarrierScan Servers to its infrastructure for complete anti-virus protection.

"This product fills an important need for users of caching and data management devices. For example, a single infected file placed on a shared storage appliance can infect the entire community of users. By integrating CarrierScan Server with Network Appliance devices, Symantec provides thousands of NetApp customers with the most advanced anti-virus protection available," said Gary Warren, senior vice president for Symantec. "This new version is yet another example of Symantec's dedication to helping customers secure enterprise networks and gateways across the entire Internet infrastructure."

Network Appliance filers are robust enterprise storage solutions capable of storing terabytes of data. The device is specifically designed for today's network-centric IT system architectures. CarrierScan Server's seamless integration with the NetApp filer ensures that users are protected from all types of malicious code when accessing files and data on these appliances.

NetCache appliances allow Internet providers and corporations to speed up the delivery of Web content to their users. By deploying CarrierScan Server with NetCache, these companies can assure that all of their users have fast access to Web content, free from viruses, worms and Trojan horses.

"Service providers and enterprise networks require scalable, high-performing security products and CarrierScan Server delivers by using Symantec's trusted and award-winning anti-virus technology," said Rod Mathews, manager of technology and strategy at Network Appliance, Inc. "After testing this product, we are excited by the level of protection and performance NetApp customers will experience when they deploy this solution."
