Symantec Sponsors Privacy and Security Research Lab at Dalhousie University

New Lab to Conduct Research on Security of Electronic Assets of Enterprises and Individuals

Toronto, ON - June 9, 2005 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced that it is one of the key private sector sponsors for the establishment of Dalhousie University's Computer Science Privacy and Security Lab. The lab, located on the university's main campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, will focus on the security of electronic assets of industries, governments, and individuals through research, education and public policy advocacy.

Symantec's commitment of $100,000 will go toward the development of academic programs and curriculum dedicated to the study of information security-related issues conducted at the lab, and to faculty positions in support of the lab.

Dr. John G. Schwarz, Symantec president and chief operating officer, will attend an all-day forum held today at Dalhousie University to formally launch the lab.

"We are very pleased to support initiatives such as this to expand the scope of information security research conducted at the university level," said Schwarz. "We are very interested in Dalhousie University's unique, multi-disciplinary approach to the study of privacy and security, and look forward to partnering with them to build a leading academic institution focusing on information security."

Dr. John McHugh, currently a senior member of the Computer Emergency Response Team at Carnegie Mellon University, will join Dalhousie University's faculty of Computer Science as director of the Privacy and Security Lab.

Thursday's forum will include keynote addresses by national and international experts on the lab's three areas of concentration: education, research, and public policy. Each keynote will be followed by a panel discussion. More information about the lab can be found at http://projects.cs.dal.ca/psl/.

The relationship between Dalhousie University's Privacy and Security Lab and Symantec is a continuation of other efforts by Symantec's University Research Program to support academic research for information security. Symantec is a strategic partner of Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab, and has also established fellowships at Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security to provide scholarship funding for two graduate students. In addition, Symantec is a sponsor of Stanford University's Computer Forum. Finally, Symantec has provided funding and support to the University of Auckland, New Zealand's largest university, for the establishment of an information security laboratory.

Symantec's University Research Program was established to facilitate and coordinate Symantec's involvement with universities that emphasize research and study in the Internet security field. In addition, Symantec provides feedback on the research conducted by universities and input on areas that the industry deems important to help direct the focus of study by universities on Internet security issues.
