Symantec extends Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino to Unix and OS/400 operating environments

Hong Kong -- February 8, 2000 - Symantec, the leader in Internet security technology, has extended its award-winning Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino application to IBM AIX, IBM OS/400 and Sun Solaris operating system environments. Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino provides these platforms, as well as Microsoft Windows NT, with the most comprehensive, automatic protection against computer viruses and other malicious code.

Designed for the protection of mailboxes, folders and databases in Lotus Notes/Domino, this new product provides MIS managers with a new weapon to defend against the continually evolving threat of viruses spread by email and the Internet.

The new software is a key component of Symantec Enterprise Security, a multi-tier solution that offers complete protection from viruses, malicious code and other Internet-borne threats at every level of the corporate network.

"When a worm virus strikes, corporate networks with thousands of users can be brought to a standstill in a matter of minutes," said Daniel Cheng, managing director of Hong Kong and China for Symantec. "With the extension of the Norton AntiVirus for Lotus/Domino, MIS managers can now provide their network users with the maximum freedom to collaborate while ensuring maximum protection from virus threats - whether users are working in NT, AIX, OS400 or Solaris environments."

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino scans, detects and repairs viruses found in Lotus environments without inhibiting or degrading server performance or stability. Maximum administrative control and flexibility allow the administrator to set scan configurations from remote computers, to choose real-time, on-demand, or scheduled scanning and to have infected files repaired, quarantined or deleted. As a result, scan times are optimised and servers receive maximum protection. Norton AntiVirus scans all incoming and outgoing SMTP, POP3, IMAP, X400, Notes Mail and cc:Mail traffic on Notes/Domino servers, including mail servers, mail hubs and pass through servers.

Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino is easy to use and configure because all operations, such as alerting, event logging, database scanning and configuration, are done in a native Notes format. Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino supports Lotus Notes/Domino release 5 and is based on the Lotus interface, so there is no new interface to learn, thereby reducing training and ownership costs.

Integration with Notes Statistics and Event Reporting provides administrators with a comprehensive set of reports, allowing them to view, print and export valuable information in numerous formats. In addition, Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino includes customisable alerts, thereby keeping administrators informed of the virus activity within their organization.

"Many of our customers who have an existing Norton AntiVirus infrastructure are eagerly awaiting Symantec's latest anti-virus solution for Domino R5 on AS/400 and IBM eServer iSeries," said Kelly Schmotzer, IBM Worldwide Groupware Segment Manager.

Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino features LiveUpdate, which can be scheduled by administrators to automatically retrieve weekly virus definition updates, ensuring that Lotus Notes/Domino servers are always protected against the latest virus threats. Also included is a modular engine called NAVEX that allows Symantec to ship fundamental changes and updates to the virus scanning engine technology through LiveUpdate.

NAVEX reprogrammes the Norton AntiVirus engine to detect new classes of viruses allowing companies to lower costs by abolishing the need to re-deploy their anti-virus solution every time a new virus type is discovered.

Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino includes Symantec's patented technologies to detect and repair both known and unknown viruses at the groupware server before they reach the desktop or network. These technologies set up a virtual computer to evaluate files, then use heuristic logic to assess the likelihood of an infection. Clean files pass right through, but viral files are stopped before they can enter the server and cause harm.
