Symantec launches Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS and Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition
Hong Kong -- April 19, 2001 - Symantec, the worldwide leader in Internet security, has launched Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS, the latest anti-virus solution that resides on the handheld machine itself and scans for and detects viruses and threats in Palm OS-compatible devices. Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS is incorporated as a unique feature of the Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition, the newest version of the world's leading anti-virus software for small businesses and professionals.
Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition, which includes Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS, will be available late April at the local market through Symantec's network of distributors and resellers. The standalone Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS is now available online from the Symantec web site http://www.symantec.com.hk
According to IDC figures, Palm OS-compatible products have captured more than 75% market share in the handheld computing market. It is forecasted that the worldwide market for these products will grow from 12.9 million in 2000 to over 63.4 million by 2004.
"As the market continuously increases, so does the threat and frequency of viruses targeted at the Palm OS, as evidenced by the discoveries of the Phage.936 virus and the Liberty Trojan horse in late 2000," said Daniel Cheng, managing director of China and Hong Kong, Symantec.
"To secure valuable data, Symantec has expanded its market-leading anti-virus solutions to protect these handheld users who run their PDA under Palm OS," he added. "With Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition and Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS, PDA and computer users have the most effective protection against security threats, including viruses, Trojan horses and other malicious code."
Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition and Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS include Symantec's highly regarded LiveUpdate Technology. Automatic LiveUpdate checks for new virus definitions whenever the user is online. New virus definitions are then transferred automatically to the handheld device during the next HotSync.
Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition features data recovery capabilities to help restore important files that were deleted accidentally by a user or by a new virus. Users can also apply the data-cleaning component of Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition to ensure that sensitive information previously deleted no longer remains on a hard drive.
Additionally, Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS provides real-time protection and on-demand scans to protect data on the Palm OS-compatible devices during synchronisations between PCs, network servers and over wireless connections. It also examines all applications in the handheld device, checks for the presence of viruses and alerts users to remove the virus upon detection.
With Symantec's exclusive Auto-Protect feature, users of Palm OS-compatible handheld devices can scan Palm applications on the handheld devices unobtrusively, while opening an application, sending files, surfing the Internet or synchronising data with a PC.
Symantec AntiVirus 2001 for Palm OS features easy installation on the PC, and allows Palm OS-compatible devices to install all files needed automatically during synchronisation. To support the application, Palm OS-compatible devices should be operated under Palm OS 3.0 or higher and HotSync Manager 3.0.3 or higher with 2MB RAM and approximately 50KB space for initial installation.
