IDC market data confirms strong growth by Symantec
Hong Kong -- August 2 2001 - Symantec has strengthened its worldwide security software leadership during 2000 by jumping from the number four to the number two Internet security software company behind Computer Associates, according to new data recently released by IDC.
Entitled "Worldwide Internet Security Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005," the report showed revenue growth of 19.8 percent by Symantec for Internet security software between 1999 and 2000. As a result, Symantec now has 9.8 percent of the market share worldwide, according to the IDC.
This growth is punctuated by a 36 percent increase in Symantec's enterprise anti-virus product sales during the June 2001 quarter, outpacing the market growth of 25 percent. In addition, June quarter 2001 sales of the company's intrusion detection solutions increased 14 percent from the same quarter a year ago, with sequential growth of 66 percent.
'These figures from IDC are a clear reflection of Symantec's effort to provide best-of-breed products for our customers in both the enterprise and consumer space," said Daniel Cheng, managing director of China and Hong Kong, Symantec. "As a thank-you for the support from our customers in Greater China, we will continue to develop and introduce effective, user-friendly software for better control and management of Internet security to this market. "
"This is a dramatic change. It's not often that you see the market leaders change so significantly in a US$5 billion market," said Chris Christensen, information security analyst for IDC.
The report stated that the worldwide market for Internet security software grew to US$5.1 billion in 2000, a 33 percent growth from 1999. IDC estimates that the market will continue to grow to US$14 billion in revenue by 2005. North America represented 55.9 percent of the market; however, IDC estimates that Asia/Pacific will be the fastest-growing region in the world for Internet security software market through 2005.
