Gartner Dataquest ranks Symantec as the world's leading
security software provider
Hong Kong -- 1 November 2001 - A new Gartner Dataquest report
ranks Symantec as the world's leading security software provider based
on new licence revenue in 2000. With 14.7 percent market share worldwide,
Symantec topped the list of the top 25 security software vendors.
The Gartner Dataquest report, titled "2000 Security Software Market
Share," shows that Symantec's growth in 2000 outpaced that of the
security software market. According to the report, Symantec grew 40 percent
year-over-year, from US$345 million in 1999 to more than US$480 million
in 2000. The total security software market grew 25 percent to US$3.3
billion in 2000, up from 22 percent growth in 1999.
Worldwide growth of the anti-virus market alone rose 19 percent in 2000
while Symantec anti-virus market growth grew by 50 percent during the
same period. The report also noted that continued growth in the security
software market is anticipated, with both public and private industry
moving security initiatives to the forefront in the wake of recent world
events.
"Symantec, as a result of its merger with Axent in December 2000,
moved from the No. 4 position to the Number 1 spot, holding 14.7 percent
of the security software market," Gartner Dataquest reported.
Security software, according to Gartner Dataquest, includes anti-virus,
encryption, intrusion detection and other security measures such as firewall,
web content security and extranet access management. Symantec provides
virus protection, firewall and virtual private network, vulnerability
management, intrusion detection, Internet content and e-mail filtering,
remote management technologies and security services.
"There is an expanding awareness of the importance of enterprise
security in the corporate marketplace as well as a growing demand for
trusted products and services that counter the blended threats of today
and tomorrow," said Daniel Cheng, Managing Director for Symantec
PRC/Hong Kong. "Corporations continue to rely on Symantec for comprehensive
security solutions at the gateway, server and client levels."
