Symantec announces new version of pcAnywhere providing secure remote access and Windows XP logo certification

Hong Kong -- 15 November 2001 - Symantec, a world leader in Internet security, has announced pcAnywhere 10.5 the latest version of Symantec's market leading, user-friendly remote control solution. pcAnywhere 10.5 includes a new security assessment tool, improved installation functionality for IT administrators and Windows XP logo certification. The new application, available in Hong Kong today, helps IT administrators improve their productivity and access servers from a remote location, while also providing users with fast, easy access to any PC.

Key features of the new package include a rebootless host, which allows IT administrators to install pcAnywhere 10.5 without the need to reboot a computer. The rebootless host is a self-contained package that can be quickly deployed and installed to resolve a problem, and is critical for IT administrators working on servers that are required to remain running constantly.

The new assessment tool also allows users to diagnose their current pcAnywhere host configuration and take advantage of any additional security features that are available. In order to provide customers with a complete record of the frequency and names of users who connect to their computer, the software will keep a record of successful logged port scans as well as failed login attempts on the pcAnywhere port.

"In today's connected world, IT professionals have to manage servers and networks enterprise-wide and provide helpdesk support to mobile workers wherever they are located," said Daniel Cheng, managing director for PRC/Hong Kong, Symantec. "As the need to save valuable time and IT resources continues to rise, IT administrators and mobile workers need solutions that offer secure access to remote machines. pcAnywhere 10.5 will provide customers the ease-of-use and confidence needed to remotely connect to another machine located anywhere in the world."

Mr Cheng added that pcAnywhere's optimised design ensures high performance at any connection speed, across a wide range of connection methods-including standard modems, ISDN lines, TCP/IP, infrared and wireless connections.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the worldwide market for remote control/remote access software will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 12.8% from US$349.3 million in 1999 to US$368 million in 2004.

The latest version of pcAnywhere will build on the advanced security features offered in the previous version, which includes ten different authentication methods, detection of remote access vulnerabilities on a network, three levels of encryption, serialisation to prevent unauthorised access, and the ability to only accept connections from specified TCP/IP addresses and subnets.

A favourite of IT departments for its reliability and secure access features, pcAnywhere provides administrators and end-users customisable and secure remote control for helpdesk and server support. It also offers strengthened secured remote access to machines for day-extenders and telecommuters. pcAnywhere has been successfully deployed on mobile machines for more than 15 years and has won more than 75 industry awards.
