Symantec Introduces Industry's First Integrated Security Solution for Network Clients and Remote Users

Hong Kong -- August 22, 2002 - Symantec, the world leader in Internet security, today announced Symantec Client Security, the first integrated security solution for workstations and remote users. Symantec Client Security integrates antivirus, personal firewall and intrusion detection technologies to effectively protect desktops against today's blended threats.

Integrated central management of these multiple technologies offers IT administrators the powerful combination of lowering the total cost of ownership and increasing the frequency of securing the network client, the most costly and least secure IT asset.

"Businesses have become more diligent about protecting workstations with single-point software such as antivirus, but this does not adequately protect them from complex blended threats that require a integrated security approach for desktops and notebooks," said David Sykes, Director, Symantec North Asia. "Symantec Client Security offers a cost effective method to deploy and manage Internet security solutions for workstations and remote users by integrating antivirus, firewall and intrusion detection functions."

According to industry analysts at IDC, enterprises recognise that as security threats change in behaviour and impact, so their security practises must change to provide comprehensive security throughout the network.

"In recent years, Internet threats have greatly increased in number and complexity. Today's blended threats can attack via multiple entry points within an organisation. To keep on top of the security issues these blended threats pose, organisations should consider using an integrated combination of antivirus, intrusion detection, firewall, and vulnerability assessment," said Natasha David, Asia Pacific, Security Software Analyst, IDC.

Symantec Client Security provides a proactive approach to security against blended threats, such as Klez and Code Red, before they attack. For example, when the firewall technology encounters a suspicious incoming or outgoing file it will call the antivirus scanning engine regardless of whether the antivirus real-time protection is turned on or off. If the antivirus scan determines the file is infected, the antivirus engine will instruct the firewall technology to raise the threat level to high with a default action to block the file from accessing the Internet or block the file from entering the client.

The integration of multiple security functions enables Symantec to provide quick and comprehensive updates in a single LiveUpdate packet when malicious code attacks occur, a much more efficient and effective alternative to multiple-product updates. Most important, these updates are delivered by the Symantec Security Response team, which provides fast, global, integrated analysis and response.

Easy configuration, deployment and management
Symantec Client Security offers IT administrators the ability to centrally configure and deploy the solution as well as set day-to-day policy management and reporting functions. To reduce administration time, administrators can easily deploy Symantec Client Security using one of three pre-packaged installations - full installation, lightly managed, and thin client, the smallest possible footprint without sacrificing protection. Administrators can also apply lock-down policies throughout the organisation to prevent users from modifying client security settings, thereby enforcing the organisation's security policies. Customised policies can be applied based on user groups (e.g. departments, locations, position, etc).

Availability
Symantec Client Security is available through Symantec's worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors and systems integrators. Pricing is based on a per node basis with a 50-99 user licence costing HK$608.79 per node.
