Symantec Teams with CPCNet to Offer Hong Kong Enterprises World-Beating Antivirus Services

Hong Kong -- November 28, 2002 - Symantec, the world leader in Internet security technology, has formed a strategic partnership with CPCNet, Hong Kong's leading business Internet and communication services provider, to better protect local enterprises from known and unknown threats. Under the agreement, CPCNet will use the Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine to provide virus scanning and repair for its SmartSecurity MailScan service to ensure Internet mails are scanned and cleaned at the server level before reaching their customers' mailboxes.

Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine detects and repairs viruses, worms, Trojan horses, mobile code, and script-based threats across all major file types and compressed file formats. It has been integrated with leading storage, caching and messaging vendors to provide complete antivirus protection.

With Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine, enterprises can seamlessly integrate platform-independent, highly scalable, robust, and manageable virus scan and repair capabilities into their environments.

"Enterprises today are looking for a convenient, fast and scalable antivirus solution to protect their critical assets in an increasingly aggressive e-business environment," said David Sykes, Symantec's North Asia Director. "With this alliance, CPCNet and Symantec will offer powerful email scanning and repair functionalities to business Internet users.''

According to US-based research house Computer Economics, viruses are a growing problem for corporate Internet users. It calculates the global cost of a single virus, the CodeRed worm, to be US$2.6 billion, including US$1.1 billion for inspection of over eight million servers, clean-up of over one million infected servers; and the actions to install, test, and certify those systems fit for service.

"Our customers are aware of the immensely destructive impact of some viruses, which have the potential to wipe out customer data and devastate their businesses," said Kenneth Tsang, General Manager of Business Development and Marketing, CPCNet Hong Kong. "We are answering those concerns with a new range of service offerings that include tools to destroy or minimise the threat of massive virus infection spreading over customers' networks when an outbreak occurs.

"Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine has been deployed worldwide and is proven to combat known and unknown viruses," added Tsang. "We are confident that our new SmartSecurity MailScan service will be welcomed by our corporate customers in Hong Kong."

Other users of Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine are Seednet in Taiwan, Pacific Internet in Singapore and NetEase in China. Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine also provides millions of Yahoo! Mail users in the globe with the most advanced antivirus protection.
