Symantec Manhunt is First Intrusion Protection Solution to Earn Common Criteria EAL3 Certification

SINGAPORE -- 29 January, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Symantec ManHunt is the first intrusion protection solution to be awarded Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 3 (EAL3) certification. This prestigious certification assures customers that Symantec ManHunt, which was evaluated by Computer Sciences Corporation of Annapolis Junction, MD and validated by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), has gone through a long and rigorous testing process and conforms to standards sanctioned by the International Standards Organization.

"Symantec is one of the only Internet security companies to offer EAL-certified solutions in two major categories - firewall and now intrusion protection," said Ross Wilson, Senior Regional Director, SEA, Symantec. "This certification highlights Symantec's commitment to standards that are becoming absolute benchmarks for Internet security providers looking to offer their customers the highest level of security in today's market."

Symantec will formally be awarded the Common Criteria EAL3 certification for Symantec ManHunt 2.11 during the RSA Conference in San Francisco on Feb. 24, 2004. Symantec's recent accomplishment provides government agencies, which require certification, with validation that they are receiving security technology to protect their corporate networks.

The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CCITSE) is a set of evaluation criteria designed to resolve the technical and conceptual differences among existing standards for the evaluation of security systems and products. Recognized by the 19 participating countries in the Common Criteria Mutual Recognition Agreement, the EAL3 certification verifies that the claims about Symantec ManHunt in its Security Target have been methodically tested and validated by a NIAP-approved Common Criteria Testing Laboratory.

Recognized for its superior protection against today's sophisticated blended threats, Symantec ManHunt is a network-based intrusion protection solution that monitors network traffic at speeds of up to two gigabits per second across up to six-gigabit interfaces, dependent upon system configuration. Its multi-layered detection architecture combines protocol anomaly detection, signature detection, denial-of-service and scan detection, and IDS evasion detection to accurately and effectively identify attacks.
