The Regional council of Franche-Comté first came into existence following the French laws on decentralization, and has existed in its current form since 1982. The local authority is active in four main areas: economic development and employment, infrastructures and transport, regional development, and education, training and learning. As part of the last of these areas, the region wanted to invest strongly in IT maintenance in high schools. To facilitate faster deployment of workstations and increase standardization of the installed base, the regional council chose the Altiris Deployment Solution from Symantec for all the high schools in Franche-Comté, covering around 15,000 workstations. In one case, the Symantec solution reduced the time required to migrate 350 workstations at one high school from one week involving four people to two people in two days―and all without any travel.
