environment variable

A string that is defined in relation to the current environment, such as a drive, path, or file name, associated with a symbolic name that can be used by Windows. Using an environment variable instead of a fixed value lets you create rules or specify programs allowing for variations of some information. To list environment variables on Windows, type “set” at the command line.
