Master Boot Record (MBR)

The Master Boot Record is contained in the first sector of the hard drive. It identifies where the active partition is, and then starts the boot program for the boot sector of that partition. The boot sector identifies where the operating system is located and enables the boot information to be loaded into the computer's main storage or RAM. The Master Boot Record includes a table that locates each partition that is present on the hard drive.
