Description

Microsoft Windows WMF/EMF image-rendering library is affected by a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to properly verify the lengths of strings contained within an affected image file before copying them into finite buffers. Any code execution that occurs will take place with SYSTEM privileges because of the nature of the affected library. This will also permit local privilege-escalation attacks.

Recommendations

Permit local access for trusted individuals only. Where possible, use restricted environments and restricted shells.

To limit exposure to local attack vectors, grant local access for trusted and accountable users only.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of suspicious or anomalous activity. This may help detect malicious actions that an attacker may take after successfully exploiting vulnerabilities in applications. Review all applicable logs regularly.

Do not accept or execute files from untrusted or unknown sources.

To reduce the likelihood of successful exploits, never handle files that originate from unfamiliar or untrusted sources.

Do not follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.

To reduce the likelihood of successful exploits, never visit sites of questionable integrity or follow links provided by unfamiliar or untrusted sources.

Do not accept communications that originate from unknown or untrusted sources.

Disabling client support for HTML email may limit exposure to this attack vector.
Microsoft has released a bulletin that includes fixes to address this issue for supported versions of the operating system.
