Description

Microsoft Internet Explorer is reported prone to a Secure Sockets Layer caching vulnerability. It is reported that arbitrary content may be cached to the computer that is viewing a malicious site when this vulnerability is exploited. This cached content will be rendered in the context of a legitimate site when a legitimate site is viewed.

Recommendations

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.

It may also be possible for attackers to more successfully exploit client flaws in the browser through this vulnerability. When possible, run client software as regular user accounts with limited access to system resources. This may limit the immediate consequences of client-side vulnerabilities.

Do not follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.

Users should be wary of visiting websites of questionable integrity or following links provided by unfamiliar or untrusted sources.

Set web browser security to disable the execution of script code or active content.

Exploitation of this issues can allow the execution of malicious script code in web clients, it may be possible to limit successful exploitation by disabling script code and active content support within a client browser. It should be noted that this mitigation tactic might adversely affect websites that rely on the execution of browser based script code.
Microsoft has released a cumulative update for supported versions of Internet Explorer to address this and other vulnerabilities. Avaya has released an advisory that acknowledges this vulnerability for Avaya products. Customers are advised to follow Microsoft.s guidance for applying patches.
