Description

Microsoft Windows Telephony Service is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure in the application to perform proper bounds checking on user-supplied data. A successful attack can result in overflowing a finite-sized buffer, ultimately leading to arbitrary code execution in the context of the affected service. This may allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely or locally to gain elevated privileges. Remote code execution is possible only on Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003; for other vulnerable platforms, the attacker must have local interactive access.

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.

If possible, block external access to the vulnerable software. Permit access for trusted or internal networks and computers only.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This includes but is not limited to requests that include NOP sleds and unexplained incoming and outgoing traffic. This may indicate exploitation attempts or activity that results from successful exploitation.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.

Since this issue may be leveraged to execute code, we recommend memory-protection schemes, such as non-executable stack/heap configurations and randomly mapped memory segments. This tactic may complicate exploitation of memory-corruption vulnerabilities.

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.

Running the affected service with the least required privileges is highly recommended. This may greatly reduce the consequences of successful exploitation.

Disable any services that are not needed.

If possible, disable the affected service completely. Note that this tactic may have adverse affects on systems that rely on the service.
Microsoft has released updates to address this vulnerability in supported versions of the affected software.
