Description

Microsoft Windows is prone to a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability. The vulnerability arises in the Microsoft Windows TCP/IP protocol driver when IP Source Routing has been enabled. A remote attacker may trigger a denial-of-service condition or may execute arbitrary code, leading to a complete compromise.

Recommendations

Configure webservers to serve only specific, defined file types.

Filter access to the affected computer at the network boundary if global access isn't needed. Restricting access to only trusted computers and networks might greatly reduce the likelihood of exploitation. Block ICMP type 131 and 137 messages because they are used to initiate a connection to the affected components.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This includes but is not limited to requests that include NOP sleds and unexplained incoming and outgoing traffic. This may indicate exploitation attempts or activity that results from successful exploitation.

Disable any unneccessary default services.

Disable IP Source Routing if it is not explicitly required.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.

Since this issue may be leveraged to execute code, we recommend memory-protection schemes, such as non-executable stack/heap configurations and randomly mapped memory segments. This tactic may complicate exploitation of memory-corruption vulnerabilities.
Microsoft has released an advisory including fixes to address this issue.
