Description

Microsoft Windows is prone to a buffer-overrun vulnerability that arises because of an error in the processing of Vector Markup Language documents. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected application.

Recommendations

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.

Ensure that all non-administrative tasks, such as browsing the web and reading email, are performed as an unprivileged user with minimal access rights.

Do not follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.

Users should never visit sites of questionable integrity or follow links provided by unfamiliar or untrusted sources.

Set web browser security to disable the execution of script code or active content.

Disabling scripting and active content in the Internet Zone may limit exposure to this and other vulnerabilities.

Do not accept communications that originate from unknown or untrusted sources.

Do not accept email communications from unknown or untrusted sources.

Modify default configuration files to disable any unwanted behavior.

Configure email client applications to display email as plain text only. This will limit the possibility of email-based attacks.
The vendor has released security advisory MS07-004 detailing updates to address this issue in supported versions of affected applications. Please see the referenced advisory for details on obtaining and applying the appropriate updates.
