Description

Microsoft Windows is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability because Microsoft Active Directory fails to handle specially crafted user-supplied Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) requests. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges. Successfully exploiting this issue will result in the complete compromise of affected computers. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition.

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.

Restrict access to the affected computer at the network perimeter. Grant access for trusted hosts and networks only.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Use NIDS to monitor networks for anomalous activity and report attempted attacks. Audit logs regularly.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.

Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker's ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.
