Microsoft Windows PGM Invalid Length Remote Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Description

Microsoft Windows is prone to a remote denial-of-service vulnerability because it fails to adequately handle specially crafted PGM (Pragmatic General Multicast) network traffic. Attackers can exploit this issue to cause an affected computer to stop responding until it is manually restarted. Successful attacks will deny service to legitimate users. NOTE: PGM is enabled only when Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) 3.0 is installed on computers running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The MSMQ service is not installed by default. Supported editions of Windows Server 2008 are not affected if installed using the Server Core installation option.

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.

Filter access to the affected computer at the network boundary if global access isn't needed. Restricting access to only trusted computers and networks might greatly reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may indicate exploit attempts or activity that results from successful exploits.
