Microsoft IIS Authentication Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Description

Microsoft IIS is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected application. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition. This issue affects IIS 6.0, 7.0 and 7.5.

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.

If possible, block external access to the affected application. Permit access for trusted or internal networks and hosts only.

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.

To limit the consequences of successful exploits, run the application with the least privileges required.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This includes but is not limited to requests that include NOP sleds and unexplained incoming and outgoing traffic. This may indicate exploit attempts or activity that results from a successful exploit.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.

Since this issue may be leveraged to execute code, we recommend memory-protection schemes, such as nonexecutable stack/heap configurations and randomly mapped memory segments. This tactic may complicate exploits of memory-corruption vulnerabilities.
