Samba SMB/CIFS Packet Assembling Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Description

Samba is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability when the 'smbd' service tries to reassemble specially crafted SMB/CIFS packets. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by creating a specially formatted SMB/CIFS packet and sending it to a vulnerable Samba server. The overflow condition will be triggered and will cause smbd to overwrite sensitive areas of memory with attacker-supplied values. Note that the smbd service runs with root privileges.

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.

Set up firewalls to block unsolicited traffic destined for ports 137, 138, 139, and 445. This may prevent exploits of this vulnerability from unknown third parties.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.

Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of suspicious or anomalous activity. This may help detect malicious actions that an attacker may take after successfully exploiting vulnerabilities in applications. Review all applicable logs regularly.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.

Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker's ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.
