W97M.WMVG.Gen - Removal

To remove this virus, repair files detected as W97M.WMVG.Gen, delete files detected as VBS.WMVG.Gen, and remove the value that was added to the registry. Here are the instructions:

To remove the virus:
  1. Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
  2. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and run a full system scan, making sure that NAV is set to scan all files.
  3. If any files are detected as infected by W97M.WMVG.Gen, click Repair.
  4. If any files are detected as infected by VBS.WMVG.Gen, click Delete.

To edit the registry:

CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. Please see the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.
  1. Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  3. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
  4. In the right pane, delete the following value:

    WMVG
  5. Navigate to and delete the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WalruS
  6. Click Registry, and then click Exit to save the changes and exit Registry Editor.

(Optional) Re-enable Microsoft Word MacroVirusProtection. If you are using Word 2000, customize your Word options by adding the Security command to the Tools menu. When the customization is completed, set the Security level of Word to the Medium or High level.
