CLEANMGR.EXE Warning

The following hoax email has been reported in the Netherlands. The original email is in Dutch; it is followed by an English translation.

Original Dutch version:

Hoi,
Er is een nieuw virus dat sinds deze week internet onveilig maakt. De grote virusbestrijders als Symantec en McAfee hebben nog geen oplossing kunnen vinden om dit virus op te ruimen, hoewel het al maanden bekend is. Wel hebben ze al een naam voor dit virus: HOAX-NL-MD-20010401. Er wordt koortsachtig gezocht naar een oplossing om een volledige ramp op internet te voorkomen. Virussen als Kournikova en Iloveyou zijn in vergelijking met dit virus maar kinderspel.

De naam van het bestand dat de besmetting veroorzaakt is CLEANMGR.EXE
Als je dit bestand op je systeem hebt verwijder het dan meteen!!!
Het is een ERG GEVAARLIJK VIRUS!!!!!!!
Nadat het is geinstalleerd op je systeem wordt het gestart op de 28e van de maand en zal het je registry deleten en belangrijke systeemgegevens en passwords e-mailen naar bepaalde nieuwsgroepen. Iedereen die deze (wisselende) nieuwsgroepen leest kan daarna je inbelgegevens gebruiken, en eigenlijk is je volledige systeem nadien ook niet meer te gebruiken. Deze moet compleet opnieuw worden geinstalleerd.

Als je deze stappen even volgt, is het probleem echter zo verholpen:
1. Kies START
2. Kies ZOEKEN
3. Kies BESTANDEN OF MAPPEN
4. Type bij naam "CLEANMGR.EXE" en bij "zoeken in" kies je voor DEZE COMPUTER
5. Als je het bestand hebt gevonden klik je er 1x op en klik daarna op de rechtermuisbutton.
6. Kies VERWIJDEREN
7. Ga naar je prullenbak of je bureaublad
8. Kies voor PRULLENBAK LEEGMAKEN in het menu

Als je dit hebt uitgevoerd, dat wordt je zeker niet getroffen door dit virus.

Hi,
This week, there is a new virus that terrorizes internet. The big virus fighters like Symantec and McAfee are yet to find a solution to clear this virus, even though it is known for months. They do have a name for this virus: HOAX-NL-MD-20010401. A solution is feverishly sought for to prevent total disaster on internet. Viruses like Kournikova and Iloveyou are child play compared to this virus.

The name of the file that causes the contamination is CLEANMGR.EXE
If you find this file on your system you should delete it!!!
It is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS VIRUS!!!!!!!
After it is installed on your system, it is started on the 28th of the month and it will delete the registry and email important system data and passwords to certain news groups. Everyone reading these (changing) news groups can use your dial up data, actually your complete system is unusable thereafter. It should be reinstalled completely.

However, if you follow these steps the problem is solved:
1. Click START
2. Click SEARCH
3. Click FOR FILES OR FOLDERS
4. Type "CLEANMGR.EXE" in the name field and at "Look in" select MY COMPUTER
5. If you find the file, click it once and then click it with the right mouse button.
6. Select DELETE
7. Open the Recycle Bin or go to the Desktop
8. In the menu, select EMPTY RECYCLE BIN

If you execute these steps, you will certainly not be hit by this virus.
