Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
  1. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and make sure that NAV is configured to scan all files. For instructions on how to do this, read the document How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.
  2. Run a full system scan.
  3. If any files are detected as infected by W97M.Michael.Gen, click Repair.
  4. (Optional) Re-enable Microsoft Word MacroVirusProtection. To do this, click Tools, click Options, and then click the General tab. (This may vary, depending on your version of Microsoft Word.)
  5. On a computer that is running Windows 95/98/Me, if the virus has executed only one time, use Windows Explorer to rename the file C:\Msconfig.sys back to C:\Autoexec.bat. If it has run more than once, you should restore the Autoexec.bat file from a recent backup.
  6. If you have problems when using the mouse or keyboard, you may need to reinstall the following files or restore them from a clean backup:
    • C:\Windows\System\Main.cpl
    • C:\Windows\System\Kbdus.kbd
    • C:\Windows\System\Kbdusx.kbd
