The risk is usually downloaded from a legitimate-looking website where the software advertised is often offered for free at other locations.

When the downloaded file it is executed, the user is prompted to send an SMS to a premium-rate number. The user receives a reply SMS containing a code they can enter into the installer.

The risk then proceeds to download and install the original software.
