Netscape and Symantec sign Strategic Agreement to Integrate and Distribute Flagship Products

Netscape selects Symantec Visual Café as preferred visual JavaTM development tool and Symantec selects Netscape ONETM as preferred Internet/Intranet development platform

INTERNET WORLD, New York -- December 11, 1996 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC) and Netscape Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP) today announced two strategic agreements that will allow each of the companies to bundle, market and distribute certain of each others' products. This alliance brings together Symantec's market-leading Java development tools products with the Netscape ONETM Open Network Environment, creating a seamless solution for Intranet/Internet developers.

In the first agreement, Netscape will market the new Symantec dbANYWHERE Workgroup Server, through its direct corporate sales force, Value Added Resellers and traditional distribution channels worldwide. Additionally, this agreement establishes Symantec Visual Café as Netscape's preferred visual Java development tool for the Netscape ONETM platform. Netscape will also promote the Symantec Java toolset on the Netscape Web site, in monthly newsletters, and in its Netscape DevEdgeTM on-line developer forum.

In the second agreement, Symantec will bundle Netscape NavigatorTM Internet client software with Visual Page and will bundle Netscape FastTrack ServerTM software with Visual Café Pro and Visual Café Enterprise. Additionally, this agreement establishes the Netscape ONE platform as Symantec's preferred Internet/Intranet development platform for its Java toolset, and reinforces a strong commitment to provide a tight integration of the Visual Café product family on both Windows and Macintosh platforms with Netscape ONE. Future versions of Visual Café will include the hosting of the Netscape Internet Foundation Classes (IFC) components in the Visual Café environment, component library and tool palette, support for IFC event handling through the Visual Café Interaction Wizard, building of IIOP capable applications, as well as integrated Java debugging in the Netscape browser directly from the Visual Café environment. Symantec will also support Netscape's extensions to HTML 3.0 in its Visual Page product family.

"Symantec is the clear market leader in visual Java development tools for Windows and Macintosh," said Richard Schell, senior vice president and general manager, Client Products Division, Netscape Communications Corp. "This agreement is a significant commitment between Netscape and Symantec to provide developers with the leading state-of-the-art visual rapid application development environment for Java and seamlessly integrate it with the Netscape ONE platform."

"Netscape ONE is the primary Internet/Intranet development platform. While at Symantec, we try to be Internet platform and standard neutral, we needed to provide a seamless integrated solution to our Java customers for the most popular development platform out there," said Mansour Safai, general manager of Symantec's Internet Tools division. "Visual Café Pro will allow developers to visually prototype Java user interfaces and instantly connect them to existing databases, not requiring anything else than the Netscape Navigator browser on the client machine."

Both companies offer market-leading Internet and Intranet technologies. Part of maintaining Symantec's leadership role in Java development tools is to continually seek new ways to make a developer's work easier and faster. With Symantec bundling Netscape Navigator into Café, Visual Café and Visual Page, developers get a complete Java development solution. Including Netscape FastTrack Server with Visual Café Pro and Enterprise will create a turnkey Internet development environment. Symantec remains committed to maintaining strategic alliances with partners to help build tools to support the future of the Internet.
