Redwood Shores, Calif. --January 20, 1998--Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Symantec Corp., (NASDAQ: SYMC) a leading provider of Java development environments, today announced an agreement to bundle Symantec's popular Web authoring program, Visual Page, with Oracle Application Server 4.0, currently in beta. The Oracle and Symantec bundle is designed to provide enterprise customers with enhanced capability to create and deploy Web sites that are the basis for reliable, scalable and easy to maintain Web-based applications.
This is a powerful competitive advantage for many organizations as accuracy, reliability and accessibility of information are critical success factors for conducting business on the Web. Under the terms of the agreement, Oracle may include a copy of Symantec Visual Page with every Oracle Application Server 4.0 Developer Kit License. Oracle anticipates making the bundle available to customers during the first quarter of 1998. Oracle customers can order additional Visual Page licenses directly through Symantec.
"Rapid application creation is a key requirement for the deployment for Web-based business applications," said Peter Relan, vice president of the Application Server Products Division at Oracle. "Symantec's Visual Page will help our customers expedite application deployment and modification with an easy to use environment based on the scalable and secure deployment capabilities of Oracle Application Server."
"We are delighted that Oracle selected Symantec Visual Page as the means to enable their enterprise customers to author for the Web," said Mansour Safai, vice president of Symantec's Internet Tools Division. "The combination of Symantec's rapid Web site development tool and Oracle's scalable Application Server will enable our enterprise customers to move their information and business swiftly to the intranet and Internet, and to meet the needs of even the most demanding business applications."
Oracle Application Server 4.0, currently in beta, is a strategic software platform for deploying business-critical, thin-client applications with superior scalability, reliability and manageability. The award-winning Oracle Application Server enables organizations to deploy and manage applications on professionally-managed servers, rather than on hundreds or thousands of desktop PCs. As a general-purpose application server, Version 4.0 will support all network clients, including PCs and network computers, serving as a universal point of access to any database, application or legacy system. Oracle Application Server 4.0 will integrate the latest industry-standard technologies and distributed object component models, including CORBA 2.0 and Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP). New Java features are slated to make the server 100-percent Java programmable, allowing Java developers to easily program new applications or components in Java, then deploy them within the Oracle Application Server for operation across any operating system or Web server platform. Other new features in Oracle Application Server 4.0 include enhanced transaction capabilities, improved Windows NT integration, and enhanced server management features.
Visual Page is a straightforward and easy to use HTML editor that provides users with the fastest and easiest way to move important business documents and crucial company information to the Web. Using Visual Page's intuitive interface and drag-and-drop controls, creation and re-sizing of tables, frames and images is simple. For advanced users who wish to add or modify HTML code directly, Visual Page generates clean, well-organized HTML code and includes a powerful source code editor.
