Symantec Dominates PC Data Top Ten Software List

Four out of the top 10 best-selling business software products in December 1997 are made by Symantec

Cupertino, Calif. --January 26, 1998--Figures released by independent research firm PC Data show that Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) dominated sales of Windows business software in December 1997. Based on units sold, four of the top ten selling products are made by Symantec – more than any other vendor.

The company's top selling product was Norton Uninstall Deluxe, which was launched just three months ago, took the ninth spot.

Meanwhile, in the highly competitive computer security software retail sector, PC Data figures for the December quarter 1997 show that Symantec sold 224,094 security software units, representing 41 percent market share. McAfee (Nasdaq: NETA) sold 194,242 units for the same period - six points lower than Symantec. In third position, with 10 percent market share is Dr. Solomon's (Nasdaq: SOLLY).

In terms of revenue for the quarter, Symantec's margin of leadership of the security market is greater; according to PC Data, Symantec's revenue for the period totaled $11.605 million or 45 percent market share. McAfee's sales were $8.327 million (32 percent market share). For the entire year, Symantec sales represented 48 percent of the security market.

"The security market is highly competitive, but the figures tell the story," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance business unit. "PC Data provides an independent indication of the best-selling products and these figures show that Symantec's security products are meeting the needs of business and consumer customers alike."

The PC Data statistics come just days after Symantec Corporation announced its fifth consecutive record quarter. Revenues for the December quarter 1997 were up 20 percent over the same quarter in 1996 at $148.2 million. For the calendar year 1997, revenues also rose by 20 percent.
