Cupertino, Calif. --February 27, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 was named Editor's Choice in PC Magazine's 1998 Utility Guide, due on newsstands March 24, 1998. This marks the third consecutive year that NAV has won the magazine's most prestigious designation as it continues to outperform products such as McAfee's (Nasdaq: NETA) VirusScan and Dr. Solomon (Nasdaq: SOLLY).
The Editor's Choice award comes on the heels of a succession of notable honors NAV has earned in the first eight weeks of this year, including PC World's "Best Buy," PC Computing's "A-List," Network Computing's "Editor Refuses to Give it Back!" and PC Magazine's "Best AntiVirus Utility in 1997" awards.
"Only a handful of products have won so many consecutive Editor's Choice awards," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "We attribute NAV's unprecedented achievements in this area to an experienced and creative development team that focuses on understanding how to best serve customers and continues to create the most complete and powerful anti-virus offering on the market. This latest award is clear affirmation of the superiority of Norton AntiVirus."
Every year, PC Magazine editors and reviewers rank utilities products and name only the best performer in each of 13 categories as Editor's Choice award recipients. This year, in addition to surpassing McAfee's offering, NAV bested the results of a staggering number of competitors' products, including Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus, IBM AntiVirus, Cheyenne InocuLAN AntiVirus, Trend Micro PC-cillin, NovaStor-Authentex Software ThunderByte Anti-Virus, EliaShim eSafe Protect, Command Software Systems F-Prot Professional, Cybec Pty Ltd. Vet Premium AntiVirus, and Quarterdeck ViruSweep.
PC Magazine editors called NAV "the best combination of virus protection, performance, and usability" and wrote, "NAV provides the best end-user experience of the products we tested. The package includes four informative videos, and installation and setup were among the easiest of the tested products. NAV's drive-oriented interface provides a rich set of scanning options, presented in a clear, well-organized manner."
The eleven competing anti-virus products were put through a series of demanding exercises, including a macro virus test, an installation test, a floppy disk detection test, a scanning speed test, a compressed files test, and a system performance test.
NAV 4.0 is part of Symantec's award-winning suite of multi-platform virus protection products designed to protect the enterprise at the desktop, server, Internet, and gateway levels. NAV 4.0 uses revolutionary Bloodhound technology to provide user with detection and repair of both known and unknown viruses. NAV 4.0 also includes LiveUpdate which automatically updates users with the latest virus definitions and can be scheduled in advance.
