Norton SystemWorks Trounces McAfee Office in Product Face-Offs

Hands-On Tests by Home Office Computing and Small Business Computing & Communications Magazines Show Norton Suite as the Clear Winner in Head-to-Head Comparisons

CUPERTINO, Calif. -January 12, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced that Norton SystemWorks surpassed Network Associates' (Nasdaq: NETA) McAfee Office in two separate independent product comparisons early this month. In the January 1999 issue of Home Office Computing (HOC) magazine, Norton SystemWorks scored 9.2 over McAfee Office's 6.5. In the January 1999 issue of Small Business Computing & Communications magazine, Norton SystemWorks received a four-star rating while McAfee Office rated only two stars.

"Because most of these products have been in Symantec's stable for some time, integration is pretty seamless and our installation of SystemWorks was uneventful," wrote HOC reviewer Victoria Hall Smith. "We noticed about a 30 percent improvement in our PC's performance after using SystemWorks."

In contrast, of their experience with McAfee Office, Smith wrote, "The suite was one of the most unstable shipping programs we have ever used. The software required us to install each utility separately, restart our PC, and then run a test for compatibility (imagine having to install every portion of Microsoft Office, reboot, and then test it!). Actually, we didn't have to test our system-it crashed every time we attempted to add another utility."

Small Business Computing & Communications editor Lincoln Spector wrote in his comparison, "[McAfee Office] is a mess-some programs have functions that are too similar, others have ones that conflict. Norton SystemWorks, on the other hand, is a well-thought-out, well-integrated suite." Spector continued by singling out the value of the utilities in the Norton SystemWorks suite and concluded, "Either of these programs will give you a lot for your money, but Norton is the one you should buy to keep your systems trouble-free."

Norton SystemWorks is made up of Symantec's award-winning utility products, including Norton Ghost.

Norton SystemWorks was designed specifically to provide consumers a comprehensive, integrated, and flexible solution to keep their computers working. Much more than a bundle, Norton SystemWorks gives users everything they need in one box-one install, one product update center, one manual, one support line, and one emergency disk set-and with a single easy-to-use interface. This seamless integration eliminates the problems consumers face with typical bundled offerings, including overlapping product functionality, significant incompatibility issues, limited interface consistency, and overall mismanagement of system resources.
