Norton Personal Firewall 2000 Protects Connected Consumers Against Hacking And Privacy Intrusions

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 12, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton Personal Firewall 2000, a flexible and easy-to-use Internet security solution that protects connected consumers from hacking and privacy intrusions. Regardless of the user's experience or type of Internet connection, Norton Personal Firewall 2000 provides out-of-the-box security from Internet threats.

"Consumers are becoming more vulnerable to both hacking attacks and the loss of private or personal information while online, especially as broadband, persistent Internet connections grow in popularity," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Products Division. "In response to this emerging threat, Symantec has developed Norton Personal Firewall 2000‹the maximum defense against malicious hackers and the most effective tool for maintaining the privacy of sensitive information."

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 protects home PC users against unauthorized connections to and from the Internet‹without requiring any special configuration or complex setup. Users can block connections to their PCs preventing hackers from gaining access to important files, passwords, banking numbers or other confidential data stored on the PC. In addition, users can configure which applications are allowed to access the Internet and are notified when an unauthorized program, such as a Trojan horse, tries to send information from the PC.

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 includes exclusive, patent-pending technology to configure the firewall automatically for the most common Internet applications saving time and minimizing unnecessary security alerts. Users can choose one of the pre-configured protection settings or customize the firewall with the intuitive, step-by-step RuleAssistant.

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 also includes enhanced security features not found in competing personal firewall products, such as the ability to prevent Web sites from downloading specific or all Java applets and ActiveX controls. Norton Personal Firewall 2000 provides comprehensive event logs and statistics detailing intrusion attempts, the IP address of potential attackers, and authorized connections. Information from the logs can be used to track the source of attempted attacks.

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 is the only personal firewall product available to include technology designed specifically to keep confidential data private. Users can designate personal information, such as credit card and bank account numbers, as confidential and then configure Norton Personal Firewall 2000 to protect that data from access by unsecured Web sites. The product also protects the user's anonymity while surfing the Web by blocking cookies on a per-site basis, preventing Web sites from tracking the user's movements around the Internet. Additionally, Norton Personal Firewall tracks and records which personal information has been sent, and when cookies, e-mail addresses, and other events were blocked.

Norton Personal Firewall 2000 is an integral part of Symantec's comprehensive family of award-winning Internet Security solutions, which also includes Norton Internet Security 2000 2.0 and Norton Internet Security 2000 2.0 Family Edition, the industry's first and only fully integrated personal Internet security suite designed for consumers.

Norton Internet Security has quickly established a leading position in the market. In March 2000, the product was the first Internet security solution to be named to PC Data's list of Top Selling Business Software when it debuted at number ten. By April 2000, the product had climbed to number seven on the PC Data list. In addition, Norton Internet Security received an Editor's Choice award from PC Magazine in the publication's security round up.
