CUPERTINO, Calif. - November 20, 2001- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Symantec's Norton AntiVirus received its 15th Virus Bulletin 100% award as a result of the most recent Virus Bulletin testing, and was the only company out of 21 major anti-virus vendors, to detect 100% of both standard and in-the-wild viruses of the sample set used for this test. The November 2001 testing was completed on the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.
"While we are seeing a trend toward more complex, blended security threats, an effective anti-virus solution remains a vital piece of a complete network security solution," said Vincent Weafer, senior director, Symantec Security Response. "Symantec was the number one performer in this round of tests, and has received a long string of VB 100% awards, proving Symantec's Norton AntiVirus continues to be the most powerful and reliable anti-virus solutions available today."
The prestigious VB100% logo is awarded to products that detect in-the-wild viruses, as tracked by the WildList Organization, during both on-demand and on-access scanning. In-the-wild viruses are viruses that are currently spreading among computer users. Standard viruses exist only in virus and anti-virus labs, not in the wild. Most standard viruses never get released into the wild, and as a result, rarely threaten users.
Symantec's anti-virus solutions provide customers with automatic protection against viruses, worms and other malicious code at all entry points, including e-mail attachments and Internet downloads. The solutions provide hands-free detection, analysis and repair of viruses, malicious ActiveX controls, Java applets and other dangerous fast-moving threats.
