U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Selects Symantec to Protect Desktops and Servers Throughout Agency

Symantec AntiVirus Solutions to Shield Networks Including FDA, CDC, and NIH

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Sept. 3, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will deploy Symantec’s antivirus solutions throughout the federal agency’s desktops and servers to defend against malicious code and cyber attacks.

Amid increasing threats posed by destructive viruses and worms, this deployment supports the critical health policy and research missions of HHS by safeguarding the agency’s information systems. With a FY 2002 budget of approximately $460 billion and around 65,000 employees, HHS includes, among other agencies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Under the agreement, Symantec personnel will provide HHS with specialized security consulting and implementation services, proactive technical support and 24x7 live telephone support from dedicated security experts. In addition, the Symantec Security Response team will send alerts to HHS, via pager, e-mail, phone, or fax, regarding the latest threats so that immediate agency action can be taken.

Longtime Symantec customers within HHS, such as the CDC and the Indian Health Service (IHS) played an important role in the agency’s decision to centrally embrace Symantec’s antivirus technology as a proven solution, now available to all departments. This decision also meets the requests of the NIH and others supporting a unified, comprehensive antivirus defense within HHS’s information assurance strategy.

“Given the size of HHS's network and the diverse types of agencies that comprise HHS, it was important for them to have a scalable security solution that is dependable and reliable in terms of operation and maintenance,” said Vincent Steckler, vice president, public sector at Symantec. “Symantec's assistance with HHS to secure the agency's cyber infrastructure is a prime example of a successful private/public partnership committed to protecting the citizens dependent on these agencies and the public at large from cyber attack.”

Symantec’s AntiVirus solution is recognized for its ease of deployment and management, offering IT administrators a central management point to set policies and ensure that ongoing updates of virus definitions and cures fully protect users at all times. Symantec AntiVirus provides access to unparalleled backend response mechanisms that enable the delivery of fast, reliable, and hands-free virus detection, analysis, and repairs with exclusive Closed Loop Automation. Even in the face of unusually heavy demand for virus definitions during serious outbreaks like the Code Red and Nimda attacks, Symantec's scalable, backend architecture ensures that antivirus measures are readily available when needed most.
