Symantec Expert to Discuss Security Strategies at E-Gov Conference

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Sept. 17, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced that Brian J. Finan, director of Strategic Programs and Homeland Security, will discuss “Comprehensive Information Assurance Solutions” at the third annual E-Gov Information Assurance Conference. The presentation will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

Finan’s presentation will detail security challenges facing federal information systems one year after Internet threats such as Code Red and Nimda redefined worldwide vulnerabilities and network defense strategies. New security technologies, implementation strategies and improved security management will also be addressed.

"A year ago, Nimda typified the new blended threat attacks; infecting via multiple means, overcoming traditional network defenses and blurring the lines between virus and intrusion-type incidents," said Finan. "To counter blended threats and prepare for new attacks coming over the horizon, information assurance for government agencies requires an in-depth defense with firewalls, intrusion detection and antivirus at the gateway, client and server levels, particularly as wireless connectivity and mobile devices erase fixed network perimeters."

Finan leads Symantec’s work securing large government IT operations, such as the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). His background includes more than 20 years of federal service in U.S. Army intelligence, where he participated in numerous counterintelligence operations during the Cold War. Finan is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College.

The E-Gov Information Assurance Conference is designed to offer practical and proven strategies for making information assurance (IA) a vital part of networked government agencies. The two-day event brings together authorities from military and civilian federal agencies along with experts from academia and the private sector.
