CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 27, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced enhancements to their program for proactive global customer notification of emerging threats. The new program includes a detailed methodology for determining the existence of global emerging threats based on factors such as the method of propagation and impact, a coordinated internal response effort across Symantec's Managed Security Services and Security Response teams , and a variety of mechanisms-text-to-voice, email and Web portal-for communicating threat information to Symantec MSS customers.
"With the increasing rate of vulnerability discovery, corporate IT teams have an imperative to patch their systems, but don't have a view into the corresponding Internet-wide threat trends," said Grant Geyer, vice president of Symantec Managed Security Services. "This new program will leverage the breadth of technology and expertise across the Symantec Managed Security Services and Symantec Security Response teams to help clients make better decisions regarding their security. Based upon statistically significant indicators, Symantec's MSS team will notify customers of emerging threats posing risk to the Internet community, as well as provide actionable recommendations."

Symantec also leverages the capabilities of Security Response and the DeepSight Threat Management System to provide rapid response regarding vulnerabilities that may not yet be actualized threats. This process includes rapid evaluation of all MSS systems for vulnerabilities, evaluation of all supported IDS systems for signature coverage if available, and rapid testing and rollout of signatures as vendors release them.
