Symantec Named Strategic Partner of Carnegie Mellon's Cylab

$100,000 Sponsorship By Symantec To Fund Internet Security Research

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 12, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in information security, today announced that is has been named a Strategic Partner of Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab. CyLab is a comprehensive research and education center established in October 2003 to create a partnership between academia, government and industry-based organizations to develop technologies and capabilities to enhance cyber security for home users and enterprises.

As a Strategic Partner, Symantec is committing $100,000 to support the development and expansion of academic programs and curriculum dedicated to Internet security research conducted at CyLab by Carnegie Mellon's faculty and students. Symantec is the only pure-play Internet security vendor to be designated as a Strategic Partner for CyLab.

"Given its position as the world's leading Internet security provider, Symantec's support and involvement will greatly expand the resources and information made available to CyLab for research purposes," said Pradeep Khosla, co-director, Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab. "Our partnership with Symantec reflects the type of coordinated effort by universities and corporations that is needed to meet the challenge of securing the nation's critical infrastructure."

As a Strategic Partner of CyLab, Symantec will have access to the research and technology generated by its staff, faculty and students. Symantec will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other CyLab partners by participating in various working groups focusing on Internet security.

CyLab was launched by Carnegie Mellon University on October 22, 2003 and is a combination of other entities at Carnegie Mellon, including the Center for Computer Communications Security, the Sustainable Computing Consortium, and the Information Networking Institute. The Software Engineering Institute's Networked Systems Survivability Program, which contains the CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC), is a partner with CyLab. In all, over two hundred faculty, researchers and graduate students are affiliated with CyLab. Additional information about CyLab and its partners can be found at www.cylab.cmu.edu.

The relationship between Carnegie Mellon University and Symantec is a continuation of other efforts by Symantec's University Research Program to support academic research of Internet security. Symantec has also established fellowships at Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security to provide scholarship funding for two graduate students. In addition, Symantec is a sponsor of Stanford University's Computer Forum. Finally, Symantec has provided funding and support to the University of Auckland, New Zealand's largest university, for the establishment of an information security laboratory.

Symantec's University Research Program was established to facilitate and coordinate Symantec's involvement with universities that emphasize research and study in the Internet security field. Aside from monetary support through Fellowships, Symantec supports universities by offering corporate spokespersons for seminars and lectures to students and faculties. In addition, Symantec provides feedback on the research conducted by universities and input on areas that the industry deems important to help direct the focus of study by universities on Internet security issues.
