Symantec Mail Security 8220 Appliance Provides Small Businesses With Comprehensive Gateway-Based Email Security

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan 23, 2006 Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced Symantec Mail Security 8220, an easy-to-deploy appliance that helps small businesses secure their organization from spam and email-based malicious code while ensuring their email remains an effective tool for collaboration and communication. With the availability of Symantec Mail Security 8220 Appliance, Symantec becomes the first security vendor to provide small businesses with three types of mail security deployment options -- an appliance, software, or hosted service -- all powered by the same leading technology. Small businesses can choose the option that works best for them based on their company's needs.

Symantec Mail Security 8220, part of the award-winning Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series of appliances, addresses the security needs of small businesses by protecting their local in-house email server from spam, viruses and other malicious code. In addition to consolidating antispam and antivirus protection, Symantec Mail Security 8220 includes an email firewall, traffic shaping, content filtering, and content compliance capabilities in a single appliance. Symantec Mail Security 8220 Appliance features industry-leading multilayered antispam technology that maximizes detection rates without impacting legitimate messages, giving small businesses the same protection used in more than 300 million mailboxes today. Protection powered by Symantec AntiVirus technology provides real-time scanning for inbound and outbound messages, automated updates, and flexible policies for handling messages containing viruses.

In order to better address the needs of small businesses, Symantec now offers three deployment options -- appliance, software, and hosted -- that provide the same highly effective mail security technology, allowing customers to choose the solution that works best for them. Small businesses that prefer the rapid deployment of an appliance can choose Symantec Mail Security 8220 Appliance while companies that prefer the flexibility of a software alternative can select Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam for Small Business, a comprehensive solution built on powerful antispam technology. Small businesses can also choose a hosted offering with Symantec Hosted Mail Security for Small Business, which provides thorough email security without the need for hardware or software.

According to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report (Volume VIII, September 2005), small businesses were the second most targeted industry in terms of attacks during the period between January 1 and June 30, 2005. A July 2005 study by the Small Business Technology Institute, which was sponsored by Symantec, also found that many small businesses do not have even the most basic security measures in place. While 56 percent of small businesses surveyed experienced at least one security incident in the past year, 20 percent have yet to implement virus scanning on their email. In addition, spam continues to be a growing problem, making up more than 61 percent of all email traffic during the period between January 1 and June 30, 2005 (Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report; Volume VIII, September 2005). With the growing number of email threats small businesses face, an easy-to-use, integrated mail security solution is a necessary component to keeping a small business secure.

"Email threats like spam and viruses not only reduce a small business' productivity, but they also pose a threat to vital, confidential information stored in the company's systems," said Rick Caccia, senior director of product management for Messaging and Web Security Solutions, Symantec Corp. "Small businesses need strong, proven, and affordable solutions that offer enterprise-class protection, like Symantec's mail security products. Regardless of which deployment option they choose, Symantec provides small businesses with the flexibility they need, in terms of capital expenditure and manageability, and the protection they require to keep their business running smoothly."
