Symantec Customers Consolidate Security Technologies to Improve Protection, Save Money
CUPERTINO, Calif. – Sept. 26, 2008 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that AMN Healthcare and Media General, Inc. have implemented Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Mail Security to secure their endpoints–including desktops, laptops and other mobile devices–and protect their email systems. With Symantec, AMN Healthcare and Media General can work with a single trusted vendor to generate significant performance improvements and cost savings, replacing security technologies from multiple vendors.
Symantec Endpoint Protection delivers unmatched defense against malware for laptops, desktops and servers by combining Symantec AntiVirus technology with advanced threat prevention to increase protection and help lower total cost of ownership. Symantec Mail Security delivers antispam, antivirus and advanced content filtering technologies, available in either a physical or virtual appliance form factor, to protect against malicious threats, including inbound and outbound email and instant messaging borne threats.
"As the threat environment and internal compliance issues change corporate risk profiles, it drives the need for integrated clients and gateways," said Chris Christiansen, program vice president for IDC's Security Products and Services group. "Reducing agents and dashboards improves security administration and reduces risk. A single vendor solution can be advantageous from the perspective of administrative overhead, predictable operational budgets, reliable customer services and timely support."
Media General, a communications company based in the Southeast, recognized the software it had deployed was not providing the level of security the business required and installed Symantec Endpoint Protection software to provide a more comprehensive endpoint solution. They deployed Endpoint Protection on more than 9,000 computers, including laptops, spread across a large geographical area. The company is also implementing advanced features of Symantec Endpoint Protection, including desktop firewalls, intrusion prevention and device and application control features. To control the growth of spam, Media General deployed Symantec Mail Security 8160 appliances.
"If malicious code or a virus shut down the systems running our network, we might not be able to get a newspaper out the door or keep a station on the air," said Mike Miller, director of information security, Media General. "The administrative console in Symantec Endpoint Protection allows us to give remote IT members access to the machines under their control. This takes a lot of the burden off of the centralized security group–they don't have to comb through logs and alerts anymore while still enabling us to quickly detect infections before an intrusion becomes an epidemic."
AMN Healthcare is the largest provider of medical staffing solutions in the United States. Following a major acquisition, AMN launched an organization-wide initiative to integrate its IT systems and improve efficiency, including implementing Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Mail Security for SMTP to ensure the security of all its endpoints and combat spam.
"I had the unique opportunity to compare Symantec's product with other vendors' offerings, and in terms of speed to write new virus signatures and central management tools, and I thought Symantec Endpoint Protection performed best," said Craig Brasher, senior director, Technology Systems Group, AMN Healthcare. "Our logs show that at least 90 percent of our incoming email is spam and it was getting to the point that the impact was similar to a denial-of-service attack. Once we installed Symantec Mail Security for SMTP, it was like a breath of fresh air. Without it, we would have had to add another Exchange server or add capacity, which would have been thousands of dollars either way. Now, users get very little spam, we have very few false positives, and our Exchange server is running comfortably."
