The Smart Talk reaches families across the U.S.

Symantec and National PTA partner to bring families together to have conversations about how to create a better internet

Did you know that 98 percent of children age eight and under have access to a smart mobile device at home? Parenting in the digital age is complex and Symantec partners with National PTA to help children act safely, responsibly, and thoughtfully online.

As part of our work with National PTA, we celebrated Safer Internet Day this February. Safer Internet Day aims to educate and raise awareness to create both a safer and better internet—one where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. The theme of this year’s Safer Internet Day was “Together for a Better Internet.”

Symantec celebrated Safer Internet Day by providing $1,000 grants to 25 local PTA units across the United States. With our financial support, these PTA units were able to host conversations with students and families about using The Smart Talk to help keep kids safe online.

The Smart Talk, an interactive tool created by LifeLock, a Symantec company, and National PTA, encourages families to have proactive, open and ongoing conversations around digital safety. The online tool brings parents and kids together and provides guided questions concerning digital safety and privacy, screen time, social media and respect, using and downloading apps, and texting and calling. Families answer the questions together, customizing their own media contract and putting their kids’ technology ground rules in writing.

We are pleased to be collaborating with Symantec to help families navigate the increasingly connected world. We thank Symantec for providing PTAs and schools across the country with resources to bring families together in conjunction with Safer Internet Day to have important conversations about how to create a better internet and help keep kids safe online, said Jim Accomando, president of National PTA.

While raising awareness of digital safety on Safer Internet Day is crucial, we support National PTA throughout the year. Our grant funding allows National PTA to get digital safety information, education, and tools in front of families, and Symantec employee volunteers are a valuable resource to local PTA units all year long. As a founding sponsor of National PTA’s PTA Connected initiative, Symantec is helping families take charge of their digital life. Read more about PTA Connected and our efforts to educate parents and empower them to help their children make smarter, safer choices online.
