Installation and Upgrade

Application Metering Solution lets you discover and monitor applications on managed computers. When you monitor an application, you can deny its use. If you use Application Metering Solution with Altiris® Inventory Solution® software, you can determine which installed applications are not being used so that you can uninstall them and use them elsewhere.


  • Notification Server version 6.0 SP3 or later
  • Client computer's running Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, XP or 2003
  • Altiris Agent version 6.0 or later on client computers 

To install or upgrade Application Metering Solution

  1. In the Altiris Console, select:
    (Altiris Console 6.0.) The Configuration tab
    (Altiris Console 6.5.) Configure > Solution Center
  2. (Altiris Console 6.0 only.) In the left pane, select Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions.
  3. Click the Available Solutions tab.
  4. Click the Solutions tab.
  5. Click the Altiris Application Metering Solution link.
  6. Click Start.

When you install Application Metering Solution, it also installs any dependencies that are not already installed. This includes a non-functioning version of Altiris® Patch Management SolutionTM software. Patch Management Solution is a dependency because it installs some core requirements used by certain features of Application Metering Solution. Altiris® Package Rule Management software is also a dependency of Application Metering Solution.

If you have Patch Management Solution 6.1 installed, it is upgraded to 6.2.

Changes in this Release

Application Metering Solution Configuration Page

The following changes were made on the Application Metering Solution Configuration page in the Summary Data section:

  • The default interval setting for Archive when older than was changed from 1 month to 3 months.
  • The default interval setting for Purge archives older than was changed from 3 months to 18 months.
  • By default, the Purge archives older than setting is not selected.

When you install Application Metering Solution 6.1 SP1, the above settings will override any settings that were previously set. If these default settings do not meet your needs, be sure to change them.

Application Monitor Policies

The performance has been improved when you monitor an application using the Known as field on the Application Definition Details dialog.

When you add an application definition on the Application Monitor Configuration page, if you specify a value for the Known as field on the Application Definition Details dialog, the value you specify must match exactly the know as value for the application in the auditpls.ini file. Example: For Internet Explorer, the auditpls.ini file has the known as entry IEXPLORE=Internet Explorer*. To create an application definition for Internet Explorer using the Known as field, you would need to enter Internet Explorer*.

Altiris Console 6.5

The documentation has been updated to include instructions for both the Altiris Console 6.0 and the Altiris Console 6.5.

If you upgraded the Application Metering agent on a client computer then uninstalled the agent, it did not completely uninstall. Application Metering Agent 25535
 If you attempted to upgrade the Application Metering agent on a client computer from 6.0.1030 to 6.1.28, the upgrade failed. Application Metering Agent 29050
On the Application Monitor Configuration page, if you selected to send event notifications in batches and selected a time interval other than 7 days, this setting was not retained.  Application Metering Solution 26265

Issues in this Release

If you upgrade from 6.0 and you had created a notification policy in 6.0 that generates a report, then you will have to reconnect the report to the policy.
