DeskView 10 is client management software developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Optimized for Fujitsu Siemens Computers hardware, it helps to minimize the total cost of ownership of managing your client hardware infrastructure. Based on industry standards, DeskView manages STYLISTIC tablet PCs, LIFEBOOK notebooks, FUTRO thin clients, SCENIC and ESPRIMO professional PCs, CELSIUS workstations, ECONEL sub-entry servers, and PRIMERGY servers. DeskView makes use of the features offered by the system for inventory management, system health monitoring, or remote BIOS configuration and updates. DeskView allows you to manage your client infrastructure completely from your desk.

Installation and Upgrade

The 10.6 release of DeskView consists of three solutions, which must be installed separately:

  • DeskView for PC and Mobiles (former DeskView for Windows)
  • DeskView for Thin Clients
  • DeskView for Server
Installing DeskView for PC and Mobiles

By default, DeskView for PC and Mobiles is installed with a license that provides support for five license-required systems (such as SCENIC P300 series) and unlimited support for license-not-required systems (such as SCENIC W600 series, ESPRIMO series, and LIFEBOOK series). Licenses may be purchased to support additional systems, which require licensing. For a full list of systems that require licensing, see the DeskView data sheet on the Web (


DeskView solutions require Altiris Notification Server 6.0 SP3 or later. 

Note: To support client computers running Microsoft Vista, install Notification Server hotfix KB31946 before installing DeskView. For more information, see article 31946 in the Altiris Knowledgebase (

The following solution components are also required and are installed (when installing from the Solution Center) with DeskView solutions:

  • Altiris Console 6.5
  • Altiris® Task Management Solution 6.0 (provides the Task Infrastructure)
  • Altiris® Network Discovery

Minimum Notification Server Hardware Requirments: 

  • Processor: Pentium III 800 MHz or higher
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • File System: NTFS system partition
  • Disk Space: 105 MB for Notification Server and components, 1 GB for SQL Server database

Minimum Notification Software Requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server SP2, or later
  • SQL Database: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3 (recommended), Microsoft MSDE 2000 (approved, but recommended for evaluation purposes only)
  • Microsoft Windows Internet Information Services (IIS): Microsoft IIS 5.0 (requires the Web server to be hosted on NTFS). This component is not installed by default with Windows 2000 or later. For Windows 2003, ASPNET needs to be enabled.
  • Microsoft Data Access Control - MDAC 2.7: Ensure MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Control) 2.8 is installed. To do this, look in your registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DataAccess. Look at the value of the Version key to see the MDAC version installed.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1: Notification Server uses Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.
  • Web Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later

Upgrade Issues

DeskView for Handhelds is no Longer Supported

There is no upgrade for DeskView for Handhelds in the 10.6 release. However, you can continue to use DeskView for Handhelds 10.5 or earlier with this product.


No Documentation for DeskView for Handhelds

The new documentation for DeskView 10.6 solutions does not include any information about DeskView for Handhelds version 10.5 or earlier. You can download documentation for previous versions of the product from the Altiris Web site (


No Upgrade for DeskView for PC and Mobiles with Out of Band Management

There is no upgrade for DeskView for PC and Mobiles with Out of Band Management in this release. If you want to use Altiris® Out of Band Management Solution™, you can install or upgrade the solution separately from the Solution Center.


You Must Upgrade All DeskView Solutions

When you install or upgrade one of the DeskView solutions (for example, DeskView for PC and Mobiles, DeskView for Thin Clients, or DeskView for Server) on a server running a previous version of DeskView, the DeskView Core component is upgraded. This means that you must upgrade all DeskView solutions installed on the server, otherwise the “unupgraded” DeskView solution tasks will fail running on client computers.


Policies are Disabled by Upgrade

When you upgrade DeskView for PC and Mobiles to version 10.6, the following policies disabled:

  • Update BIOS
  • Update BIOS Settings
  • Update Processor Microcodes

After you upgrade, you must configure and re-enable the policies.


Upgrade Steps

To ensure that all required components are installed, we recommend that you upgrade the solutions from the Solution Center.

To upgrade DeskView solutions from the Solution Center
  1. From the Notification Server computer’s Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab (If you are using the Altiris Console 6.5, select View > Configuration).
  2. In the left pane, click Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions.
    The Solution Center page opens in the right pane with a list of Available Solutions.
  3. Click Segments.
  4. Click Partner Solutions.
  5. Click the solution that you want to upgrade.

  6. Follow the instructions.

What's New in this Release

Improvements for this release include the following new features:

DeskView for PC and Mobiles

New Feature DeskView Energy Added

You can use the DeskView Energy tool to update and activate the power saving scheme remotely on a collection of computers. You can run the tool on a schedule to ensure the computers' power scheme settings are always set to your company's standards.

New Feature Hardware Diagnostics Added

You can remotely run memory, CPU, HDD, or LAN diagnostics on a client computer. The results are displayed in the computer's resource manager.

To use DeskView Diagnostics, you must deploy the DeskView Diagnostics Agent on client computers.

Note: Only computers with Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later support DeskView Diagnostics.

Local Notifications Can Be Configured

It is possible to configure Notifications to be displayed as popup windows, logged to a file, or logged to the system event log on the client computers. To configure local notifications, use the Enable/Disable Notifications policy.

Improvements in DeskView Security

Improvements in DeskView Security include the following new features:

Removable Storage Access Control Status Collected and Displayed

You can view removable storage device access control status in Resource Manager > DeskView System Data > Characteristics. You can view if the removable storage devices are disabled or set to write-protected mode.

To control the access to removable storage devices, use the Update Device Security client tool.

Removable Storage Devices Can be Set to Write-Protected Mode

You can use the Update Device Security client tool to remotely set the removable storage devices to the write-protected mode.

Note: Only computers with Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later support the write-protected mode.

A New Collection Added for the Update USB Host Controller Options Client Tool

The Update USB Host Controller Options client tool, which lets you disable the USB host controller, is now assigned to the All Systems Without USB Keyboard and Mouse collection.

DeskView Client Version Updated

DeskView Client version 6.20 is included in this release.

DeskView for Handhelds

DeskView for Handhelds is no Longer Supported

There is no upgrade for DeskView for Handhelds in the 10.6 release. However, you can continue to use DeskView for Handhelds 10.5 or earlier with this product.

Rollout of DeskView Agent

It is not possible to rollout the DeskView Agent to a client computer that has DeskViewClient.msi package of the same version already installed. If you have installed the DeskView Client without the Notification Server, the DeskView Client must be uninstalled to rollout the DeskView Agent from the Notification Server.


Issues with DeskView Client 6.20

The DeskView Agent setup package installed on client computers contains Fujitsu Siemens Computers DeskView Client software. The following issues with DeskView Client drivers must be taken into account when installing or uninstalling the DeskView Agent on client computers.

Systemdata and Multiple Monitors on Notebooks

Both internal and external monitors will not always appear.


Managing Computers with Windows 2000 Operating System

DeskView 10.6 includes DeskView Client version 6.20, which no longer supports the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. If you want to manage computers with Windows 2000, you can obtain DeskView Client package version 6.02 by contacting DeskView support (DeskView@Fujitsu-Siemens.Com) and install it on the Notification Server.


Managing Computers with Windows Vista Operating System

Make sure that you install the latest DeskView Agent version 6.20 on computers with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. We recommend that you use the Install Recommended DeskView Agent policy to install the appropriate DeskView Agent onto each of Fujitsu Siemens Computers systems in your environment.


DeskFlash Tools Fail to Run when Quota Exceeded

Sometimes, when you launch DeskFlash tools too often, the tools fail to run with the following error: "1816: Not enough quota is available to process this command." To resolve this issue, restart the client computer either locally or using a DeskOff tool.


DeskFlash Tools Blocked on Certain Systems

DeskFlash will be blocked on ESPRIMO vPro systems running Windows VISTA with less than 2 GByte RAM because of reliability reasons. An upcoming Windows VISTA Service Pack 1 will solve this issue, DeskFlash will not block after installation.
