Question
Are there any tools that will change the Package Server assignment option for all Patch Management Solution and Software Delivery Solution Package objects?

Answer

***NOTE*** These are unsupported tools for use only in Notification Server 6.x version of the product.

Yes, there are tools that can do this, and they are attached to the right of this article. Currently, the following four tools are available:

  1. PMS_SetPkgSvr_All.exe: sets the "All Package Server" assignment to all Patch Management Solution package objects.
  2. PMS_SetPkgSvr_AutowithManPreStage.exe: sets the "Package Servers automatically with manual prestaging" assignment to all Patch Management Solution package objects.
  3. SWD_SetPkgSvr_All_New.exe: sets the "All Package Server" assignment to all Software Delivery package objects.
  4. SWD_SetPkgSvr_AutowithManPreStage_New.exe: sets the "Package Servers automatically with manual prestaging" assignment to all Software Delivery package objects.
  5. SWD_SetPPkgSvr_individually_NoSourceFile.exe: sets the "Package Servers Individually" assignment to all Software Delivery package objects that do not contain any source files.

Notes:

  • All four tools will write entries into the Notification Server logs.
  • By default, when you enable the "Allow Package Server distribution" option within the Patch Management > Server Settings > Microsoft Settings > Microsoft > Advanced page, all Patch Management package objects will receive the All Package Server assignment. This is because, this assignment option is hardcoded in Patch Management Solution. If this option is disabled, then all Patch Management Solution package objects will be given the Package Servers Individually assignment. To rectify this, enable the option and then run tool 1.
  • In order for tool 2 to be used, the Allow Package Server distribution option within the Patch Management > Server Settings > Microsoft Settings > Microsoft > Advanced page must first be disabled, so as to prevent all new Patch Management Solution package objects from receiving the All Package Server assignments. Tool 2 can then be run to modify all existing Patch Management Solution package objects, as well as run each time the Bulletin staging process has completed, so that all new Patch Management Solution package objects are provided with this assignment.
  • Tools 3 and 4 are used if you want to ensure that all Software Delivery Solution package objects have been given the same Package Server assignment.  These two tools will not touch SWD packages that do not contain any source files, which corresponds to how the GUI action is designed (two new files have replaced the original ones - 29.07.2008).
  • Tool 5 should be used if the original versions of tools 3 or 4 were run, so that package objects that do not contain any source files receive their correct Package Server assignment.

  • Please use the following command to get executable file.
  • c:\>expand PMS_SetPkgSvr_AutowithManPreStage.ex_ PMS_SetPkgSvr_AutowithManPreStage.exe
